About the Author

Brian T. Murphy is a Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He earned degrees in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (BS, MS) and Virginia Tech (PhD). After spending two years of postdoctoral training at the University of California San Diego, he was hired into the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UIC in 2010. Brian runs a drug discovery research program (www.murphylabuic.com). He was recognized as a National Geographic Explorer and a Distinguished Lecturer for the American Society of Microbiology. In Chicago, his lab partners with local community centers such as the Boys & Girls Club to perform high-end biomedical research with middle and high-school students. Dr. Murphy’s program has been featured in the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Chemical & Engineering News, NPR, the London Science Museum, and >70 additional global news outlets. Brian is a freelance writer who covers politics and issues of social equality.

Brian was a contributing writer for RebootIllinois.com, for Virginia Tech’s Collegiate Times, and Ology.com.  His political essays have been published in the Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune, Roanoke Times, and other publications. His scientific writings have been published in >10 international peer-reviewed journals, and he has contributed a chapter to a United Nations educational initiative (UNESCO-EOLSS) aimed at educating young scientists.
